Social Services Research Group
Alan has been a member of SSRG since 1987 and on the EC since 1995. Alan took on the role of Treasurer in 1999, facilitating financial matters related to SSRG and works closely with Jackie Watson, our co-ordinator.
Alan has worked in social care in various roles since 1985, including work as a research officer, project officer and a wide range of planning and commissioning functions for Tameside MBC, and more recently as Principal Officer (Strategic Planning) and now Head of Performance across all services in the Community, Health and Social Services Directorate at Salford City Council.
Alan's core interests in terms of SSRG relate to performance measurement, Joint Strategic Needs Assessment and business planning, including the current role of SSRG representative on the ADASS Standards and performance Committee.
Alan is also the current Chair of the SSRG Standing Committee on Adult Services.

Estelle has been a member of SSRG since 1999, and joined the EC in November 2006.
Originally from Cornwall, Estelle has lived in Liverpool since going to university there. After being involved in firstly health and then social care for several years, she is currently the Research & Information Officer for Sefton MBC’s Health & Social Care Directorate.
There she is responsible for all adult management information, including the statutory returns, performance indicators and data analysis, particularly with a view to improving performance. This is therefore where her main interests lie with respect to SSRG.
Estelle represents SSRG on the Adult Review Group (ARG).

Paul
has been a member of SSRG since a long forgotten date in the 1970's, and
has held each of the branch offices for SSRG in Scotland. He has been on
the NEC and now EC for various periods since 1984, sharing the representation
of Scotland with other Branch officers for part of this time.
Paul has worked for four Scottish local authorities, first in planning and development roles in social work, and more recently in regeneration and social strategy roles with central departments, including Planning, Strategic Policy and at present Corporate Services. He has responsibility for four staff teams in social strategy, covering social inclusion including A City for All Ages, the city strategy for older people, community safety, and youth justice.
Current Post: Social Strategy Manager in the Corporate Services Department of the City of Edinburgh Council
Interests in good practice for research, evaluation, service scrutiny and management information. Topic interests in social justice and inclusion, regeneration, health inequality, access to work, community safety and youth justice.

Greg is Senior Research Fellow in Social Work at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford. He has a broad set of research interests and has written widely about family court social work, pastoral care, restorative justice and probation.
Greg worked as a probation officer before concentrating his energies on university-based research, teaching and a range of editorial roles.

Andrew Pithouse is co-editor of SSRG’s Research Policy and Planning. He is Director of Research in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. His recent published work is in the area of family services evaluation, children looked after, early intervention. Recent funded research involving local authority and voluntary sector partners include a review of advocacy services for children in Wales; piloting the Common Assessment Framework and the Integrated Children’s System in Wales and England with colleagues at Open University, Loughborough and Royal Holloway Universities; developing an ITC model to assist decision-making in children’s services with colleagues at Lancaster, Hull and Nottingham Universities.

Chris
has been a member of SSRG since 1994, on the editorial board since 2000 and
joined the EC this year (2004).
Chris, originally from Belfast, came to Sussex to do a PhD in 1977. After successfully completing that he had various community posts in local government in the region and joined West Sussex Social Services in 1994 as Principal Research Officer. He is currently the Manager of the Research Unit in Social and Caring Services as well as having some corporate responsibilities around research management.
Main interests include Research Governance, user and carer involvement in research and promoting and raising the profile of research in general.
The role in SSRG involves liaising between SSRG and the other main regional research group SEARIG so that they work together in the interests of the region.

Martin
has been a member of SSRG since 1992, and joined
the EC in 1994 as an elected member/regional rep:
he was elected as Chair in 2005.
Between 1987 and 1992, Martin worked in a residential
unit for people with learning disabilities, before
moving, in 1992, to take up the post of Research
Officer for Hampshire County Council Social Services
Department. In December 2004, he moved to the Social
Care Workforce Research Unit, based in King's College,
London, as a Research Fellow.
Martin is interested in all aspects of research
methods and working with all stakeholders in social
care to develop approaches to research and enhance
its influence. More substantive research interests
include people with learning disabilities and adult
protection. As Chair, Martin sees that his role
is to help steer and develop SSRG in terms of services
to members and in identifying opportunities where
members'
views can influence the social care research agenda.

Patricia
has been a member of SSRG since the 1980s. She first joined the Executive
Committee as Secretary. This was followed by three years as Chair during
the 1990s. Since then she has been a member of the Executive Committee first
in the role of immediate past Chair and then as Elected Member.
Patricia has worked in social care in London since 1972. Her work has covered research, planning, policy development and information management across five London Boroughs. She currently works as a Principal Policy Officer with Haringey Council where she is involved with children's services development and planning.
Patricia represents SSRG on the ADSS Information Management Group.
