SSRG Newsletter - June 2001: Monitoring Winter Pressures/Capacity planning

The NHS Executive approach to monitoring Winter Pressures was seen by SSD's as too narrowly focussed and in 2000 a group of 8 tracker authorities agreed to develop a broader based approach. We are expecting a DoH circular in the near future which will move away from the reactive Winter Pressures approach towards a pro-active capacity planning approach. We have agreed to work with ADSS to:

• pull together the work of the 8 tracker authorities (Terry Davies doing this)
• establish an SSRG web debate based on the tracker baseline
• prepare a joint SSRG/ADSS response based on this debate

At this stage we do not know exactly what core data set will be contained within the circular (if any) or whether it will be negotiable. There is likely to be a revised sit-rep and a new toolkit to facilitate completion. I will be liaising with the central Winter Executive Support Team (WEST). At this stage the work being done is preparatory, The request for assistance has come from ADSS.
